Scientific and Practical Seminar on Cat Colors and Coloristics
Pattern development from wild cats to Felis catus
About the Event
Seminar Goals
The seminar aims to explore the evolution of coat patterns (from spots to stripes and other complex forms) through the lens of wild cat knowledge, to address current questions from breeders and felinology experts.
Seminar Goals
The goal of the seminar is to explore the evolution of coat patterns (from spots to stripes and other complex forms) through the lens of wild cat knowledge, to address current questions from breeders and felinology experts.
1. Color genetics — a young scientific discipline
- Bridges theory (geneticist scientists) with practice (breeders and judges).
- Provides genetic justification for each color trait.
- Explains patterns of color inheritance.
2. Coloristics
This is a practical branch of felinology studying pigmentation and its visual manifestations in coat, skin, eyes, and mucous membranes of cats.
3. Coloristics and genetics — the foundation for:
- Scientific breeding of cats.
- Proper documentation of pedigree papers (registration of breeding work).
4. Accurate color determination
Correct color recording in documents helps avoid conflicts and misunderstandings between members of the felinological community: judges, breeders, and new kitten owners.
5. Study of wild cat species
Essential for understanding domestic cat colors. For example, tiger genetics helped unravel the "golden" colors in domestic pedigree cats, and crossbreeding with wild cats introduces new colors that require study.
